Aerobics classes use a specialized set of maneuvers (or choreography), with a specialized vocabulary. There are too many maneuvers to be easily listed, but these are some of the most common.
Don't try to memorize this list before class. Just do what you see the other students doing. Or you can visit our video section where you can learn the steps while watching the online videos. The Basics
- Never lock out knees and elbows (keep them "soft").
- Keep your body in a neutral position, neither arch nor round your back.
- Always keep your abdominal muscles tight.
- All kicks should be low kicks.
- The music should be at about 122 to 128 bpm in order to complete each move with proper form.
- While doing high impact footwork, keep light on the balls of the feet. Imagine you're on a glass floor.
- Make the whole leg act as a shock absorber.
- Never let the knees extend past the toes.
- Always point the knees in the same direction as the toes.

Teaching Aerobics - Choreography
A 32-count phrase refers to the numbers of beats or pulses that go by in one "phrase" of music and is therefore a 32-count phrase. Music is naturally divided into phrases, which can be broken into smaller parts called measures, which normally consist of 4 beats of music. If you were to put 8 measures together, you would have 32 beats or counts of music. These 32-count phrases are the building blocks for complete songs. The phrases create patterns that you can follow and use as an instructor. A typical song might have a 32-count phrase which is the introduction, then a 32-count phrase which is the verse, then a 32- count phrase which is the bridge, then a 32-count phrase which is the chorus, and so on.
Music that is phrased in 32 counts makes it possible for instructors to choreograph combinations and routines that end up "on the right beat". Without 32 counts, it will be difficult to follow the music and your routine will finish on the wrong foot. Class participants can detect if you are on the beat or not especially students that are musically inclined.
Moves or combinations should be structured in 32 count blocks so that you begin and end exactly on beat. Create patterns of movement that follow the patterns of the music to add incredible energy to your classes, along with a sense of smoothness and organization.
To build a 32-count combination, choose 4 moves that go together. An example of 4 moves might be:
1. Step - touch 2. Step - hamstring 3. Grapevine 4. Jumping jacks
Now that you have 4 moves that go together, perform each move for 8 counts.
Step 1 would be (do each for one count):
- Step right
- Touch with left
- Step left
- Touch with right
- Step right
- Touch with left
- Step left
- Touch with right
This provides a total of 8 counts. Now you can continue on to Step 2 above and perform it for 8 counts. Then Step 3 and finally Step 4. You now have a 32-count combination.

Notation
There is no evidence that a notation exists to describe aerobic steps. Therefore, a notation has been invented for easy to follow and understand the difficulties of some steps. This notation is text-based, to allow for easy typing, easy downloading and copying. Every good instructor before coming to any class, should prepare such notes as a guide for the class. If you are lost with the notations, try to watch the instructional videos showing the steps as well. (the video database is growing every day, and steps which you may not find today, you may find tomorrow - therefore stay tunned and remember to register)
The basic elements of this notation are:
"======" is a step. Whether or not this is a step movement, a step is shown for reference.
"A" is a foot (left or right) facing forward, on the floor or step. Which foot is which, should be obvious from reading the notation. The left foot is usually on the left, relative to the facing.
"V" is a foot facing backward, on the floor.
"<" is a foot facing left, on the floor. If you only see one of these on the diagram, both feet are next to each other, facing left.
">" is a foot facing right, on the floor. If you only see one of these on the diagram, both feet are next to each other, facing right.
"@" is a foot in the air, facing the same direction as the other foot.
Putting the symbols together to represent a position, we get:

This represents two feet, side by side, facing the step. This is the start position for all maneuvers, unless a different start position is specified.
Positions are put together in groups of four. Each position in the group represents one action (or step) to one beat of music. An example of a basic step (left foot lead) would be:

Floor Maneuvers
These maneuvers involve stepping (more or less normally) on the floor.
March. That's right, just march. The diagram makes it look like you're standing still, but you're raising an alternate leg each time. (This is the only diagram that has that problem.)

Step Maneuvers
These maneuvers involve stepping normally up onto a step, then back down.
Basic Step, or "basic" for short. This is like marching, only onto the step. Face the long side of the step. (As a variation, you can face the short side instead.) Step up on the step with one leg, bring the other up, then go back down the way you came.

Knee lift, or "knee" for short. Lift the knee.

X-Step. An X-Step is just a V-Step forward (onto the step, if using a step) and then a V-Step backwards. Here's the backward part.

L-Step. Knee lift, then move sideways (typically off a step), then knee lift and move back to where you were. This takes eight beats. Four beats of this (either first or last) is, logically enough, called a half-L-step.
